I routinely get emails with new office format files, yet running an older system with my own programming which prevents an upgrade. Ideally want to carry a USB drive, which holds the program to read these files, but don't want to 'install' (I.e.edit registry and add files to the main drive).

You can use the Docx Reader application for the purpose you have mentioned here. Firstly, download the application and install it normally on your computer, then go to the installation directory and copy the contents to a new folder on the USB drive. Afterwards, uninstall the application from your computer and you can launch it from the drive.
